What Gridstride does
Gridstride shows where you are as a military grid reference (MGRS, 1 m / 10 m / 100 m), USNG, UTM and latitude/longitude, and helps you navigate on foot with waypoints, a compass bearing and distance, recorded tracks and maps that work offline. It works in English and Spanish and needs iOS 17 or later; the Apple Watch app needs watchOS 10 or later.
Getting started
- Open Gridstride and allow location access While Using the App.
- Position shows your current grid. Pick 1 m, 10 m or 100 m precision, and use Copy or Share.
- Convert turns a grid you were given (MGRS/USNG, UTM or lat/long) into the other formats, and can save it as a waypoint.
- Waypoints lists your saved points. Tap one to navigate to it, with an arrow, azimuth, back azimuth and distance.
- Tracks → Start recording records your route, even with the screen off, until you pause or stop.
Frequently asked questions
What are MGRS and UTM?
UTM divides the Earth into 60 zones, each 6° of longitude wide, and gives a position as metres east and north inside a zone, for example 19H 346000E 6299000N. MGRS (used by NATO forces; USNG is the same system in the US) is built on UTM: zone and band (19H), a two-letter 100 km square (CD), then easting and northing digits. More digits mean more precision: 3+3 digits is 100 m, 4+4 is 10 m and 5+5 is 1 m. Read the easting first (“right”), then the northing (“up”).
Gridstride ignores the special zones around Norway and Svalbard, and near the poles (north of 84°N or south of 80°S) it shows latitude/longitude only.
Degrees or mils? True or magnetic north?
In Settings, choose the angle unit (degrees or NATO mils, 6400 per circle) and the north reference. Magnetic bearings use the declination from your iPhone's compass, or a value you enter yourself. Check that it matches your map and compass before you navigate.
How do I download offline maps?
Open Waypoints, switch to Map, choose the Offline map and open Offline maps. Maps are grouped by country (Chile and the United States) and you can search them. Tap Download on the region you need. Large maps (up to about 330 MB) keep downloading if you leave the app; you can Pause and Resume them. A downloaded map is checked before it is installed and then works with no connection at all. Use Wi-Fi for large maps.
When newer map data is available, an Update button appears.
How do I delete an offline map?
In Offline maps, tap Delete next to the map and confirm. The list shows how much space your maps use. Offline maps are not included in iCloud backups, so after restoring a backup you download them again.
How does the Apple Watch app work?
The watch app has three pages: Grid (your current MGRS in large type, with the precision button and UTM), Compass (distance and bearing to the selected or nearest waypoint) and Waypoints (your list from the iPhone, sorted by distance). Mark here saves your position as a waypoint and sends it to your iPhone. Open Gridstride on the iPhone once so it can send your waypoints to the watch. There is also a Last grid complication for watch faces.
How do I export a track as GPX?
Open Tracks, tap a saved track and tap Export GPX. The share sheet lets you save the GPX 1.1 file to Files, AirDrop it or open it in another app.
Widgets, Control Center and Shortcuts
Add the Last grid widget to your Home Screen (small or medium) or Lock Screen: touch and hold the screen, tap Edit → Add Widget and choose Gridstride. On iOS 18 or later, add the Copy my grid control to Control Center (or the Action button). It is also an App Shortcut for Siri and the Shortcuts app: say “Copy my grid in Gridstride”. It opens Gridstride and copies your current MGRS.
While you record a track, a Live Activity shows it on the Lock Screen and in the Dynamic Island.
Why does it ask for location only “While Using”?
That is all Gridstride needs. While you record a track it keeps receiving your location with the screen off, and iOS shows the blue location indicator; when you pause or stop, background use ends. Your location never leaves your device. See the privacy policy.
Night use
Turn on Red night mode to keep your night vision, and Keep screen on so the screen doesn't lock while you navigate. Both are in Settings.
How accurate is my position?
Gridstride shows the accuracy your iPhone reports (for example ±5 m). Under trees, in canyons or between buildings it can be worse. Wait until the accuracy is small before you mark or report a grid, and always carry a paper map and compass as a backup.

- Waypoints lista tus puntos guardados.
